Texas Back-to-School Tax-Free Weekend: Dates, Rules, and Eligible Items

Texas shoppers can purchase qualifying clothes, footwear, backpacks, and school supplies tax-free from August 7 through August 9, according to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

Texas Sales Tax Holiday Dates and Deadlines

The tax exemption period begins on Friday, August 7, and runs through midnight on Sunday, August 9. During this three-day window, consumers can buy eligible merchandise without paying state and local sales taxes. According to the Texas Comptroller’s office, the timing depends on when the transaction clears. For online orders, the purchase qualifies as long as the buyer’s payment processes during the exempt period, even if the delivery arrives after August 9.

Price Caps and Qualifying Items

The state-mandated $100 price limit applies strictly to individual items rather than the total transaction amount. A shopper buying two separate pairs of pants priced at $85 each pays zero sales tax on both items, even though the combined total reaches $170. Eligible goods include most children’s and adults’ clothing, footwear, standard backpacks, rolling backpacks, messenger bags, and specific classroom tools such as notebooks, calculators, and colored pencils.

Shipping and handling fees charged by sellers count toward the final price of an item. According to the Comptroller, if a pair of jeans costs $95 and shipping adds $10, the total price rises to $105. Because that final sum exceeds the $100 threshold, the entire transaction becomes taxable.
