Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centre to Launch Pediatric Residency Program in Midland, Texas
Midland, TX – February 6, 2026 – Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) will establish a pediatric residency program in Midland, Texas, aimed at addressing the critical shortage of pediatric healthcare professionals in the Permian Basin. The program is slated to officially begin on July 1, 2028, and is projected to support 12 pediatric residents annually by 2030.
The initiative is supported by notable contributions from the Scharbauer Foundation and the Permian strategic Partnership. Mary Ann Beninati,CEO and President of the Scharbauer foundation,emphasized the program’s importance,stating,”This program represents a step toward addressing the critical need for pediatric care in the Permian Basin by bringing in additional pediatricians and pediatric specialists to Midland. These physicians will serve the community while training the next generation of doctors.”
The program will offer training in general pediatrics, as well as specialized areas including neonatology, pediatric endocrinology, and pediatric behavioral/mental health. This comprehensive approach aims to equip residents with the skills necessary to address the diverse healthcare needs of the region’s growing young population.
Tracee Bentley, President and CEO of the Permian Strategic Partnership, highlighted the program’s alignment with the association’s focus on quality of life in the Permian Basin. “We must ensure we have consistent and accessible healthcare for children and their families. This is why partnering with texas Tech University Health Sciences Center on the creation of a pediatric residency is critically critically important. As more young families continue to grow and raise their families here, we want to make sure we have the health care professionals they need, right here in the Permian.”
Dr. Spearman of Texas Tech Physicians expressed confidence that the program will attract and retain qualified pediatricians in the region, ensuring continued access to expert-driven care. “The Permian Basin will see more pediatric providers as they complete their residencies, and we feel confident that many of them will remain in the region,” she stated.
The establishment of this residency program is viewed as a long-term investment in the health and well-being of the Permian Basin, building a sustainable healthcare infrastructure for future generations. As Dr. Rice-Spearman noted,”Together,we are not just meeting needs today in the Permian Basin but also building the foundation for tomorrow.”
