The Genesis Invitational: First Look at Riviera’s Return

The Genesis Invitational: A Century of Tradition and a Test for the PGA TOUR’s Best

The PGA TOUR returns to the historic Riviera Country Club for The Genesis Invitational, a tournament steeped in tradition and now poised to test the world’s top golfers with new challenges. After a year’s absence due to the wildfires that impacted Pacific Palisades, California, the event returns to its iconic venue, carrying with it a renewed sense of community and a commitment to recovery, as exemplified by the California Rises fundraising initiative.

Riviera’s Evolution and the 2026 Tournament Setup

Celebrating its 100th anniversary, Riviera Country Club has undergone recent modifications in preparation for hosting not only The Genesis Invitational but too the U.S. Women’s Open in four months and the Olympic Games in 2028. The most significant changes include new tees that extend the course to a maximum of 7,383 yards, making it the longest it has ever played.

The par-4 finishing hole has been lengthened by 24 yards to 499 yards, but the most notable alteration is the new launch pad at the par-3 fourth hole, now stretching to 273 yards. This makes it potentially the longest par 3 in PGA TOUR history, excluding major championships, surpassing the eighth hole at Cherry Hills Country Club (276 yards) which is situated at a higher altitude. Despite the increased difficulty, the fourth hole saw limited high scores in recent years, with only one triple bogey recorded in the 2023 and 2024 editions.

Scoring and Course Conditions

Historically, Riviera has yielded low scores, with nine champions recording double-digit under-par totals and averaging nearly 15-under for 72 holes. The 2024 tournament saw a field scoring average of 70.104, setting a tournament record. Players can expect firm conditions, with Poa annua greens rolling up to 12.5 feet on the Stimpmeter and Kikuya rough maintained at 2 inches. The absence of an intermediate cut of rough encourages aggressive play with careful course management.

Tournament Format and Field

The Genesis Invitational will feature a cut after two rounds, with the low 50 players (plus ties) and those within 10 strokes of the lead advancing to the weekend. This format is consistent with other Signature Events on the PGA TOUR, including the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament.

Weather Forecast

The tournament is expected to begin with some rain and wind, with daytime highs struggling to reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Conditions are forecast to improve throughout the week, with lighter winds and temperatures nearing 70 degrees Fahrenheit for the final round.
