Government Proposes Work-From-Home Scheme to Ease Holiday Traffic Congestion

The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has proposed a work-from-home or work-from-anywhere scheme for specific dates surrounding the Christmas 2026 and New Year 2027 holiday period. Directorate General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan announced the proposal during a press conference on October 27, 2026, in Jakarta, as reported by detikFinance. The initiative aims to disperse heavy travel volumes and prevent severe gridlock during the peak end-of-year migration.

Timeline of Proposed Remote Work Dates and Holiday Traffic Peaks

Transportation officials have mapped out a specific travel timeline to manage commuter flow. The ministry predicts that the peak of the Christmas exodus will occur on December 23, 2026, while the return traffic peak is projected for January 3, 2027. To flatten these travel spikes, the government has proposed remote work arrangements on December 21 and 22, 2026, ahead of the outbound peak, and on January 4, 2027, immediately following the return peak.

Cross-Sector Coordination and Additional Safety Measures

Alongside the remote work proposal, authorities are finalizing a Joint Decree to enforce comprehensive traffic management strategies. National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) Head Brigadier General Aries Syahbudin stated that law enforcement will conduct rigorous safety inspections, known as ramp checks, on public buses during the upcoming Operation Zebra, as covered by Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps. Furthermore, authorities plan to deploy localized traffic engineering such as contraflows and one-way systems on arterial routes leading to popular tourist destinations.

Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi emphasized that safety enforcement also extends to freight transport. As reported by ANTARA News, the government will restrict heavy vehicles with three or more axles from operating during peak periods to lower accident risks on major highways.

Free Public Transportation and Mudik Registration Details

In addition to regulatory controls, the Ministry of Transportation is rolling out a subsidized travel program to reduce private vehicle usage. According to Compass, the government has organized a free homecoming program targeting 2,882 passengers for the holiday season. The initiative provides 70 buses serving ten major destination cities across Java. Registration for the program opens from December 12 to December 21, 2026, with departures scheduled for December 22 and 23, 2026.
