Two suspects aged 18 and 19 have been placed in complete restrictions following a hostage rescue operation by the Dienst Speciale Interventies in Zwijndrecht. Officers entered an apartment on Tomato Square on Saturday afternoon, October 31, 2026, where they freed a 21-year-old man from The Hague and seized a firearm.
The two arrested individuals are an 18-year-old from Papendrecht and a 19-year-old from Rotterdam. Because they are currently held in complete restrictions, they are permitted to speak exclusively with their lawyer. Investigators are examining whether the hostage situation is connected to an earlier seizure abroad.
Hostage Rescue on Tomatenplein
The large-scale police action unfolded on Saturday afternoon when the special intervention unit raided the Zuid-Holland apartment. Inside the premises, authorities liberated the 21-year-old victim and apprehended the two young men. Forensische Opsporing subsequently conducted an extensive investigation inside the home, and officers recovered and confiscated a firearm from the scene.

Investigation Into German Drug Seizure
Police are reviewing a possible motive stemming from events earlier in the week. On Wednesday, October 28, a 21-year-old Dutch man was arrested during a control in Germany, where the German customs authorities intercepted and seized 30 kilos of amphetamine. Dutch law enforcement is investigating whether this drug confiscation and arrest served as the catalyst for the subsequent hostage-taking in Zwijndrecht.
Upcoming Court Appearance
Following their arrest and transfer by police, the two suspects face a scheduled hearing on Tuesday, November 3, where they will be brought before the rechter-commissaris. Authorities continue to probe the incident and potential involvement of other parties, though no further announcements are being released while the investigation and restrictions remain active.
