Key West Remains the Top Choice for Spring Break 2026, According to New Study
As spring break 2026 approaches, a new study by Upgraded Points reveals that Key West, Florida, continues to be the most sought-after domestic destination for U.S. Travelers. The analysis, based on Google search trends from January 2025 through January 2026, indicates a strong preference for warm-weather beach towns, with Florida dominating the list.
Florida Dominates Domestic Spring Break Searches
Key West emerged as the top domestic spring break destination, topping search interest in 17 states and Washington, D.C. These include Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Fox News also reported on these findings.
Destin, Florida, followed closely behind, ranking as the number one choice in 15 states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Utah. Combined, Key West and Destin account for a significant portion of the top domestic results.
Beyond Florida: Other Popular Destinations
Even as Florida remains a spring break hotspot, other destinations are gaining traction. South Padre Island, Texas, is the most searched destination in five states – Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Travel Trade Today highlights this trend.
Lake Havasu, Arizona, also generated strong search activity, ranking first in Arizona, California, and Nevada. Panama City Beach, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, each emerged as favorites in two states.
Theme Parks and City Attractions Gain Popularity
The study also revealed intriguing in-state preferences. In Florida, Orlando generated more search interest than coastal destinations like Key West, Destin, and Panama City Beach, suggesting that theme parks and city-based attractions remain strong draws alongside traditional beach vacations. Similarly, in Texas, Galveston outpaced other in-state beach destinations.
International Destinations See Strong Interest
Looking beyond the U.S., international destinations are also capturing the attention of spring break travelers. Upgraded Points found that Mexico dominates international search interest, with Cancún being the clear standout, ranking as the top-searched international destination in 13 states. Greece ranks second, leading search interest in 8 states, while Belize leads 5 states and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, tops 4 states. Iceland and Peru each rank as the top-searched international destination in 3 states.
“Search trends can give us clear insight into which locations travelers may be researching, even before bookings happen,” said Keri Stooksbury, editor-in-chief at Upgraded Points, in a PR Newswire press release. “From familiar U.S. Beaches to international resorts, this data reveals where Americans are considering for their next spring break trips.”
