RFK Jr. Unveils New Dietary Guidelines: A Shift Towards Whole Foods and Away From Added Sugar
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have released the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030, marking a significant reset of federal nutrition policy . Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the guidelines, which emphasize whole foods, healthy proteins, and fats, while declaring a focus on reducing added sugar and ultra-processed foods.
A Return to “Real Food”
The new guidelines represent a departure from previous recommendations, prioritizing nutrient-dense foods. Secretary Rollins emphasized the importance of incorporating more protein, dairy, healthy fats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables – in fresh, frozen, canned, or dry forms – into the American diet . This shift aims to put “real food back at the center of the American diet.”
Ending the “War on Saturated Fats”
A key change in the 2025-2030 guidelines is the end of previous recommendations to limit saturated fats. Secretary Kennedy stated, “We are ending the war on saturated fats,” signaling a reassessment of the role of fats in a healthy diet. The focus has shifted towards limiting added sugars and ultra-processed foods.
Focus on Ultra-Processed Foods and Added Sugars
The guidelines specifically call for a “dramatic reduction” in the consumption of highly processed foods containing refined carbohydrates, added sugars, excess sodium, unhealthy fats, and chemical additives . Secretary Kennedy further declared “war on added sugar” , highlighting the detrimental effects of excessive sugar intake. The guidelines recommend limiting added sugars, with a maximum of 10 grams per meal .
Impact and Alignment with Administration Goals
These updated guidelines, published every five years, will influence school lunches, medical advice, and overall nutrition standards. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated the announcement aligns with President Trump’s domestic promise to “Make American Healthy Again” . The administration describes the new food pyramid as “the most significant reset of federal nutrition policy in history” .
