Toronto’s 156 ONEFIVESIX: A Modern Korean Culinary Destination
Toronto’s vibrant culinary scene continues to evolve, with Korean cuisine gaining increasing recognition. Among the establishments leading this trend is 156 ONEFIVESIX, a restaurant offering a contemporary take on traditional Korean flavors. Originally known as 156 Cumberland, the restaurant has successfully rebranded and relocated, solidifying its position as a gourmet destination.
From Yorkville to Queen Street West
156 ONEFIVESIX first opened as 156 Cumberland in Yorkville around November 2021. After approximately ten months of preparation for a move, the restaurant reopened in September 2025 under its new name and location on Queen Street West (1100 Queen St. W.). This relocation has brought a refreshed atmosphere and a broader customer base.
A Michelin-Recognized Culinary Experience
156 Cumberland earned Michelin recognition for three consecutive years, a testament to its culinary excellence. Chef and owner Jeong Yoo-seong expressed gratitude for the recognition, viewing it as encouragement for continued growth and improvement. Despite this acclaim, the restaurant remains focused on delivering a quality dining experience rather than solely pursuing accolades.
Innovative Korean Fusion Cuisine
156 ONEFIVESIX distinguishes itself through its innovative approach to Korean cuisine, blending traditional flavors with Western culinary techniques. Signature dishes include Yukhoe (raw meat) – enhanced with elements like red pepper paste, pear gel, and fried buckwheat – and Grain Chicken Wings, stuffed with grains and glazed with black garlic sauce. The menu also features Korean-style meat ssam platters with options like 48-hour slow-cooked beef short ribs and galbi-marinated skirt steak.
An Elevated Dining Atmosphere
The new location on Queen Street West offers a more intimate and cozy atmosphere, accommodating around 25 guests. The design incorporates luxurious green and dark wood tones, with an open kitchen allowing diners to observe the culinary team at work. The restaurant’s ambiance is further enhanced by stylish décor, including green suede banquettes and gold cutlery.
A Family-Driven Passion
Chef Jeong’s wife plays a key role in the restaurant’s operation as the manager. Their partnership began during their time studying abroad in Canada, and she has been a constant source of support. The restaurant’s journey has faced challenges, including the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic shortly after its initial opening.
Looking Ahead
Chef Jeong’s vision for 156 ONEFIVESIX is one of steady, incremental progress – “Sinabro,” a Korean word signifying slow and gradual development. As the restaurant continues to evolve, it aims to provide a unique and memorable dining experience that showcases the best of Korean cuisine in a contemporary setting.
