Torrevieja Mourns Death of Three-Year-Traditional Girl in Suspected Domestic Violence

Torrevieja, Spain, observed a minute of silence on Sunday in remembrance of a three-year-old girl who died allegedly at the hands of her father, who subsequently took his own life. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief and a renewed focus on domestic violence and child protection in the Alicante municipality.

Minute of Silence and Community Reaction

Dozens of residents gathered at City Hall to participate in the minute of silence, a gesture of condemnation and solidarity with the family. Mayor Eduardo Dolón expressed the community’s shock, stating, “We are still shocked, wondering so many things that society and human beings are capable of doing evil.” He conveyed the support of Torrevieja residents to the family, emphasizing that they are sharing “these hard moments.”

Dolón stressed the need for reflection on child protection and collaborative efforts to eradicate violence, stating this “very hard setback” should prompt action. He added that authorities will use the term “alleged” until the investigation confirms the details of the case, and that the loss of the child’s life is a tragedy.

Details of the Incident

The incident came to light after the mother reported to the Civil Guard on Saturday night that she had no news of her daughter and feared for her safety. She had previously alleged abuse and threats from her ex-partner, including a threat to harm their daughter if she ended her current relationship.

Government Response and Support for the Mother

The Government Delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé, informed the mayor on Saturday that confirmation of the case as vicarious violence was pending until Monday morning. Mayor Dolón confirmed that the mother is currently with her family and receiving support from social services, psychologists, and specialists from both Torrevieja and her city of residence.

“The pain is very great but we have to help her and be close to that family so that she can move forward,” Dolón said, acknowledging the complexity of the grieving process and the availability of professional support.

Call to Action Against Gender Violence

Felipe del Baño, Commissioner for the fight against violence against women of the Generalitat Valenciana, issued an appeal to victims of sexist violence, urging them to seek help from institutions and assuring them that there is a path to safety. He emphasized that combating this issue is a societal responsibility requiring coordinated efforts from all administrations.

“Let them know that the administration is behind them to help them, to accompany them, to protect them and to get them out of that scenario of violence, both them and their sons and daughters,” he added.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Further details will be released as they become available.
