Kimi Antonelli Claims Historic Title in Mexico City
For me, when he was there in the garage at the age of 11, it seems like a few years ago, not seven or eight years,
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said, reflecting on a journey that culminated on a Sunday in October.
Kimi Antonelli claimed his place in history as the youngest Formula 1 world champion by finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix, securing the 2026 title with four rounds remaining. He became the youngest F1 World Championship winner since Sebastian Vettel. The 20-year-old Italian driver leapt out of his car to an emotional embrace from his parents and younger sister Maggie, followed by a bear hug from Wolff, as reported by ESPN. Antonelli reached the milestone in just his second season in the sport, stepping into the Mercedes seat previously held by Lewis Hamilton.
Superstitious Bans and Family Measures Ahead of the Race
Ahead of the decisive weekend, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff enforced strict measures to shield his young driver from external pressure, according to reporting by the Daily Express. Wolff forbade the team from manufacturing championship t-shirts prior to the race, dismissing potential coronation gear as bad luck.
Antonelli’s family coordinated their own approach, arriving in Mexico City late to avoid distracting the driver during the title-deciding weekend. Despite Wolff’s superstition-driven ban on official commemorative merchandise, some members of the Mercedes crew bypassed the directive to produce a custom “Champion of the world” hat and a personalized shirt for the driver.
Tears and Memories on the Final Laps
The emotional weight of the achievement caught up with Antonelli during the closing stages of the race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The Bologna-born driver admitted that tears impaired his vision as he navigated the final laps toward the podium.
I think I lost probably two seconds because I was already crying,
Antonelli said, as reported by the Daily Express. I couldn’t see clearly ahead – and I could see two Ferraris somehow with the tears!
A lot of memories went through my mind in that moment, covering all memories since karting. It was a very special final lap, and crossing the finish line allowed him to let it all out because achieving one of his biggest dreams is very special. Sharing and witnessing this moment with his whole family, team, and friends makes it a memory that will be always remembered. After crossing the finish line, Antonelli was embraced by his parents and younger sister Maggie before receiving a huge bear hug from Mercedes boss Wolff.

Toto Wolff Rails Against Win-at-All-Costs Racing Culture
During his post-race media session, Wolff offered a scathing critique of modern racing values, contrasting them with his young driver’s demeanor. The Mercedes boss revealed he discussed the state of the sport with FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
This notion of win at all costs, selfish, opportunistic, ruthless for your own benefit, that model of racing driver has died,
Wolff told reporters, as documented by ESPN and the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald. We have a new champion that represents values like humility, integrity, loyalty, respect.
Calling out what he termed “the few entitled ones in Formula One,” Wolff urged critics and crash-prone competitors to look at Antonelli as a standard for professional conduct.

The Road Ahead to Brazil and Beyond
With the championship secured in Mexico City, Antonelli faces four remaining rounds in the 2026 calendar, beginning with next week’s race in Brazil—the home country of his childhood racing hero, Ayrton Senna. While Antonelli described his maiden title as merely the beginning, Wolff expressed absolute confidence in the driver’s future prospects.
I believe that if we give him the car, he’s going to be in the hunt for more titles,
Wolff stated, according to ESPN. This was the first today. There will be more.
