Jan-Lennard Struff Shocks Novak Djokovic at Swiss Indoors

Novak Djokovic Falls to Jan-Lennard Struff in Basel Second Round

Novak Djokovic lost to German tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff in a three-set match at the Swiss Indoors Basel, damaging his chances of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin. Struff defeated Djokovic 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-7 (5) in a contest lasting two hours and 36 minutes. The defeat marks Djokovic’s first loss against Struff after winning their eight previous encounters.

Struff Serves Past Djokovic to Secure Upset Victory

Struff relied on heavy serving and aggressive play to disrupt Djokovic’s rhythm on the court. The 36-year-old German fired 27 aces, including a decisive serve down the center to clinch match point. Under immense pressure, Struff successfully saved all six break points that Djokovic earned throughout the match. I know that I have to play in attack. There is only one way to play this match. I am very happy, Struff said after the win, as cited by the ATP website.

ATP Finals Qualification Hopes Face Steep Climb

The early exit deals a major setback to Djokovic’s bid to secure a spot at the year-end ATP Finals. Rafael Jodar’s earlier defeat had opened a path for Djokovic to overtake the Spanish player in the ATP Live Race To Turin by winning the Basel tournament. Following the loss, Djokovic sits 319 points behind Jodar with only the Paris Masters remaining before the Turin event, severely limiting his chances to improve his standing. Djokovic currently shares the record with Roger Federer for the most qualifications in tournament history, having earned a spot at the ATP Finals 18 times.
