Texas Tech Quarterback Brendan Sorsby Enters Treatment for Gambling Addiction

Lubbock, Texas – Texas Tech University announced Monday that transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby has taken an indefinite leave of absence to enter a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction. The decision comes months after Sorsby’s return to his home state was reportedly secured with a multimillion-dollar deal, according to the university’s statement.

Texas Tech expressed its commitment to supporting Sorsby throughout his recovery, stating, “We are committed to supporting Brendan through his recovery process and to ensure his long-term health and well-being.” No timeline for treatment or potential availability for the upcoming season was provided.

The 22-year-old Sorsby began his collegiate career at Indiana University in 2022 before transferring to the University of Cincinnati for the past two seasons. He transferred to Texas Tech in 2026.

ESPN reported, citing unnamed sources, that Sorsby allegedly placed “thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app.” This activity could potentially impact his eligibility, depending on the specifics of the bets.

The NCAA eased its rules regarding gambling in 2023 to acknowledge the increasing legalization of sports betting. Still, the organization maintains a permanent ban for athletes who wager on their own games. According to ESPN, Sorsby allegedly bet on Indiana football games in 2022, only betting to win. He did not place any wagers on the one game in which he appeared as a freshman that season, preserving his eligibility for 10 games with the Hoosiers in 2023.

The NCAA is currently investigating the situation, as reported by ESPN.
