Ukraine Expands Strikes on Russian Territory, Cites Weakening of Aggression

Ukraine is escalating its military campaign by conducting more frequent and impactful strikes on targets within the Russian Federation, according to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. These actions, described as “sensible, effective and strategically well-thought-out,” are intended to disrupt Russia’s war efforts and limit its regional influence.

Sybiha’s Statement and Rationale

Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine is expanding its “deep strike campaign” against what it deems legitimate targets in Russia. He characterized these strikes as “our own sanctions against the Russian war machine” and affirmed that Ukraine has no intention of scaling them back. Sybiha emphasized that the strikes are already weakening Russia’s “aggressive and terrorist potential” and hindering its ability to project power in Europe and support other regimes, particularly in Iran.

Increased Capabilities

Ukraine now possesses the capability to strike targets over 1,000 kilometers within Russia, and is doing so on a larger scale. This suggests a growing arsenal of long-range weaponry and improved targeting capabilities.

Domestic Impact in Russia

Sybiha further asserted that the strikes are intended to bring the realities of the conflict home to the Russian population, stating that the war initiated by their leadership is “returning to where it came from – their country.”

Andrii Sybiha’s Background

Andrii Ivanovych Sybiha has served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine since September 5, 2024. Prior to this role, he was the Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, a position he held from May 31, 2021, to April 12, 2024. Before that, Sybiha served as Ukraine’s Ambassador to Turkey from August 22, 2016, to May 19, 2021. He graduated from the University of Lviv in 1997 with a degree in international relations and is fluent in English and Polish.
