Ukraine-Russia peace Talks: US Proposes Miami Summit with June Deadline
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine and Russia have been invited to a new round of peace talks, to be hosted by the United States next week. This marks the first time the US has directly proposed hosting negotiations between the two warring nations.
According to Zelenskyy’s statement released Saturday, the proposed location for the summit is Miami, Florida. The US administration has reportedly set a timeline for reaching a peace agreement, urging both parties to finalize terms by the start of summer – June.
“The Americans propose that the parties end the war by the start of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties precisely according to this timetable,” Zelenskyy stated, indicating an anticipated increase in diplomatic pressure to achieve a resolution.
This development follows earlier discussions held this week in the United Arab Emirates, where representatives from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States convened to explore potential pathways to end the ongoing conflict. A key topic of discussion during the UAE meeting was the potential establishment of a free economic zone in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
The US-hosted talks represent a notable shift in the diplomatic efforts to resolve the war, signaling a more proactive role by Washington in mediating a peaceful outcome. The June deadline introduces a defined timeframe, potentially accelerating the negotiation process.
