Global Climate Talks Address Maternal Health Risks

Pregnancy and birth constitute a new fault line in the global climate crisis, according to Simon Stiell, UN executive secretary on climate change, speaking at a pre-COP31 event held in Fiji in early October, PassBlue reported. The United Nations annual climate change conference in November will feature extreme-heat effects on maternal health as a dedicated topic on November 9, marking the first time health has been included in the Action Agenda formalized around the Paris Agreement.

Survey Data Details Healthcare Worker Observations

Wellcome, a foundation focused on health research, released a worldwide survey conducted by Censuswide that collected data from 1,000 healthcare professionals in Australia, Brazil, India, Britain, and Zimbabwe. Arthy Hartwell, head of climate and health policy at Wellcome, stated that 98 percent of respondents have already cared for a pregnant woman they believe was harmed by heat. The survey findings indicate heightened risks of premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth, and maternal complications associated with extreme heat exposure.

Regional Heat Impacts Spur New Clinical Guidance

Europe and Britain have experienced severe consequences from rising temperatures, including an estimated 3,000 heat-associated deaths during a 2022 heat wave when temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius. In response to these findings, the International Confederation of Advisers and Midwives published a guide for midwives this summer to address pervasive heat emergencies. Neha Mankani, humanitarian support and climate engagement adviser for the confederation, noted growing evidence of associations between heat exposure and adverse outcomes such as preterm birth and stillbirth.

Antalya Climate Conference Financing Goals

At the upcoming COP31 conference in Antalya, Tūrkiye, Wellcome plans to link heat waves and maternal health directly to climate financing initiatives. Hartwell outlined three primary objectives for the summit: ensuring pregnant women are included in national climate and heat plans, delivering the first World Health Organization guideline on heat and pregnancy, and improving tracking data for the health impacts of heat on pregnancy.
