Unprecedented Spread Threatens DRC

The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo is spreading faster than any previously recorded outbreak of the virus, according to United Nations humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher. Speaking at an emergency meeting with UN agency heads, Fletcher stated that the virus is currently killing one person every 30 minutes inside the country, warning that the global community must mobilize immediately to prevent the response from falling behind.

Three months after the outbreak was declared, officials report that the disease is moving at an unprecedented pace.

The Threat of the Bundibugyo Variant

The current surge involves the Bundibugyo variant, for which there is currently no specific vaccine or treatment available. According to official figures published by Congolese authorities, the outbreak has caused more than 2,128 deaths, out of 4,566 confirmed cases, according to the latest toll published by the Congolese authorities.

For comparison, the most lethal recorded Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo occurred between 2018 and 2020, resulting in nearly 2,300 deaths out of 3,500 recorded cases. The current outbreak has already accumulated a death toll nearing that historic peak, driving the United Nations to label it the fastest recorded in the history of the virus.

An Urgent Call for Solidarity

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher emphasized the urgent need for international backing during Friday’s briefing. “We have to move with speed, scale, and solidarity,” Fletcher said, calling for resources to prevent the virus from gaining further ground.

A Widening International Funding Deficit

Financial tracking from the World Health Organization shows a significant deficit in the international response budget. A joint preparedness and response plan launched in early June by the health agency of the African Union and the World Health Organization set a budget of $518 million. According to the World Health Organization, international donors have mobilized only $264 million of that total.

Containment Efforts and Community Engagement

Public health authorities continue to monitor transmission vectors in affected regions as response teams work to contain further spread. The World Health Organization and partner agencies are pressing member states to fulfill remaining financial commitments to support treatment centers, contact tracing, and community engagement in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
