Western Carolina Claims Victory Over UNC Asheville in Women’s Tennis Clash
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina Catamounts secured a 4-2 victory over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in a non-conference women’s tennis match held on Friday, March 6, 2026. The match, played at the Western Carolina Tennis Courts, saw the Catamounts capitalize on a strong doubles performance and key singles wins to defeat their opponents.
Doubles Competition Sets the Tone
Western Carolina gained an early advantage by winning the doubles point. The duo of Mariya Dobreva and Mia Miranda defeated Angelina Joy Hug and Sofia Segui of UNC Asheville with a score of 6-1. Zoe Lui and Kelly Coetzee further solidified the Catamounts’ lead, securing a 6-0 victory over Valeria Centeno and Isabella Moss. The third doubles match between Axelle Van Beauden/Jenelle Roberts (WCU) and Avery Sager/Maria Sol Alvarez Brandon (AVL) remained unfinished, with Western Carolina leading 4-3.
Singles Matches Determine the Outcome
The singles competition saw a split of wins, but ultimately favored Western Carolina. Mariya Dobreva defeated Angelina Joy Hug 6-2, 6-4, while Mia Miranda overcame Isabella Moss with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Bulldogs Seem Ahead to St. Thomas
UNC Asheville (6-4) will return to action on Monday, March 9, to face St. Thomas (Fla.). The match is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. From the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Training Complex in Orlando, Florida. Sofia Segui is a freshman from Calvia, Spain, majoring in Business Management.
