Unidentified Man Found in Mid Wales Reservoir: Facial Reconstruction Released in Appeal for Information

Authorities in Wales have released a facial reconstruction of a man whose body was discovered in a reservoir in Mid Wales in October 2024, hoping to finally uncover his identity. The case, spanning over 16 months, remains a baffling mystery due to the complete lack of personal belongings or identifying information found with the deceased.

Discovery and Initial Investigation

On October 17, 2024, a dog walker found the man’s body in the Claerwen Reservoir, a remote location in Mid Wales. He was wearing a Zone 3 Agile wetsuit, size XL. A comprehensive search of the area, involving helicopters, drones, and boat teams, yielded no clues – no vehicle, no belongings, and no indication of how he arrived at the remote location. Sky News reports that police have explored countless avenues, including medical databases, criminal records, missing persons reports, and international alerts through Interpol.

Facial Reconstruction and Key Characteristics

To aid in identification, detectives collaborated with Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University, a leading forensic reconstruction unit. Using CT scans of the man’s skull, they created a detailed facial reconstruction. Professor Caroline Wilkinson, involved in the reconstruction, noted the man had an unusual dental pattern – an open bite – which could make him recognizable. Sky News

Ongoing Questions and Theories

The cause of death remains inconclusive following a post-mortem examination. Investigators estimate the man may have been in the reservoir for up to 12 weeks before being discovered, suggesting he entered the water around mid-summer 2024. One theory suggests he may have been swimming and had belongings in a dry bag, but there is currently no evidence to support this. The reservoir’s size – four-and-a-half miles long – made a full search of the bottom impractical.

Police Appeal for Information

Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting of Dyfed-Powys Police emphasized the unusual nature of the case. “Currently, none of the available information to us suggests a criminal element to it, however it would be remiss to say that new information may not change that,” she stated. Police are appealing to the public for any information that might lead to the man’s identification, hoping to locate family or friends and provide him with a dignified final resting place. Anyone with information is urged to contact Dyfed-Powys Police through their online portal dedicated to the case. Sky News
