United Airlines Launches ‘Relax Row,’ Transforming Economy Seats into Couches
United Airlines is redefining the economy travel experience with the introduction of “United Relax Row,” a new seating option that allows a row of three economy seats to transform into a lie-flat space. The airline announced the innovative feature on March 24, 2026, aiming to provide increased comfort for long-haul flights.
What is United Relax Row?
The United Relax Row consists of three adjacent economy seats equipped with individually adjustable leg rests that fold up to a 90-degree angle, creating a couch-like surface. This feature is designed to appeal to families with modest children, couples, and solo travelers seeking more space and comfort during extended flights. Customers purchasing the Relax Row will receive a custom-fitted mattress pad, specially sized blankets, extra pillows, and a stuffed plush for children, enhancing the cozy environment.
Availability and Aircraft
United plans to launch the Relax Row in 2027, initially on Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 widebody aircraft. By 2030, the airline intends to offer the feature on over 200 aircraft, with up to 12 United Relax Row sections per plane. The airline will be the first in North America to offer this type of seating and holds exclusive design rights within the region.
Location on the Aircraft
The new seating option will be located between the United Economy and United Premium Plus sections, providing a distinct comfort level within the economy cabin.
Exclusive Design and First to Market
United Airlines is the first North American airline to introduce this sky couch concept and holds North American exclusivity on the design. Similar options, such as Air New Zealand’s Skycouch and All Nippon Airways’ Couchii, have been available on international airlines for several years, but United is bringing the concept to North American travelers.

Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, stated, “Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them.”
Booking and Pricing
Pricing for the United Relax Row has not yet been released. Further details regarding booking and pet-friendly policies will be announced closer to the launch date in 2027.
