A multi-venue retrospective in Santiago honors the literary and cinematic legacy of writer Antonio Skármeta through curated screenings and academic discussions. The Cátedra Antonio Skármeta de Escrituras Creativas has partnered with the university’s film archive, the Goethe-Institut, and the Plataforma Cultural to organize the tribute event.
Opening Screenings Set for Early November
The program opens on Monday, November 2, 2026, at the Ágora of the Plataforma Cultural at the Campus Juan Gómez Millas with a screening of the 1973 film La Victoria. Directed by Peter Lilienthal, the 85-minute feature follows Marcela as she leaves Curicó for Santiago to find work, tracing her political awakening and transition toward the socialist movement. Isabel Mardones of the Goethe-Institut will participate in the opening event. Screenings continue on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, with the 1983 film Ardiente paciencia, directed by Skármeta himself. The 80-minute production details the relationship between poet Pablo Neruda and his illiterate yet devoted mail carrier against the backdrop of a romance with a local villager. The film, which was banned in Chile during the military dictatorship, features commentary from Alejandra Carmona Cannobbio, an academic at the Faculty of Communication and Image (FCEI).
Closing Academic Panel Scheduled for November 5
The tribute concludes on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at the FCEI Council Room with a panel discussion dedicated to Skármeta’s body of work. German researchers Karla Kutzner and Uwe Carstensen will join the session, which will be moderated by Pachi Bustos, director of the School of Cinema and Television at the Universidad de Chile’s Faculty of Communication and Image.
