UPMC Children’s Hospital in Harrisburg Uses Teddy Bear Clinic to Ease Pediatric Anxiety
HARRISBURG, Pa. — Anxiety is a significant mental health challenge for children and adolescents in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), over 1 in 5 teens have been diagnosed with a mental health condition, with anxiety being the most prevalent CDC Report. Experts note that stress can manifest in everyday situations, including routine checkups and hospital visits.
Pediatric healthcare providers recognize that anxiety presents differently in each child. Some may exhibit avoidance or fear, while others experience amplified physical symptoms like stomach pain or headaches.
Addressing Medical Fear Through Play
To proactively address these concerns, UPMC Children’s Hospital in Harrisburg hosted its first teddy bear clinic on Saturday, February 17, 2024. The clinic was designed to help children become more comfortable with medical environments and procedures before experiencing fear UPMC News.
The event allowed children to interact with medical tools and practice procedures using their teddy bears. “Kids may have experienced these things at their pediatrician’s office, but this is an opportunity for them to process that experience through play and this is a non-threatening environment,” says Sandy Schreffler, lead child life specialist with UPMC Children’s UPMC News.
