Record Heat Wave Sweeps Across the Western and Central United States

A historic heat wave is impacting the western and central United States, shattering temperature records across multiple states. The unusual warmth, which initially gripped the West, has expanded eastward, bringing unseasonably high temperatures to regions that were experiencing freezing conditions just days prior.

Unprecedented Temperatures

Dozens of cities from California to Colorado have registered their highest March temperatures on record, according to the National Weather Service. On Friday, temperatures reached 44.4°C (111.9°F) in areas along the California-Arizona border, establishing a national record for the month of March Southwestern United States.

The rapid temperature shift is particularly striking. In Chanute, Kansas, temperatures rose from a record low of -10.5°C (13.1°F) on March 16th to a record high of 32.8°C (91°F) just four days later.

Expansion into the Central Plains

The heat wave has moved eastward, impacting cities in the Central Plains. Kansas City, Missouri, and North Platte, Nebraska, both recorded new March maximum temperature records on Saturday, reaching 33.3°C (91.9°F).

Alerts and Wildfire Risk

The National Weather Service has issued extreme heat alerts for desert areas along the southern border and a high wildfire risk alert for much of the Central Plains states, including Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Temperatures are running up to 17°C (30.6°F) above seasonal averages.

A report from World Weather Attribution (WWA), a group of international scientists, suggests that this record heat wave would have been “nearly impossible at this time of year in a world without climate change.”
