Exercise Modifications and U.S. Resource Prioritization
The Argentine government acknowledges that the original plans for Atlantic Dagger will be altered, with a potential cancellation remaining a possibility. The final decision hinges on the strategic choices made by the United States in response to the Middle East crisis. Currently, the exercise is still slated to capture place in the province of Córdoba, though its execution remains uncertain.
Negotiations indicate a scaled-back scenario compared to initial designs. The U.S. Has reportedly reduced planned funding, and participation is now limited to fewer than 160 personnel deployed to Argentina – a significant decrease from earlier estimates. This reduction reflects the necessitate to prioritize resources in other strategic areas amid the U.S.-Iran conflict.
Atlantic Dagger: A Framework for Cooperation
Atlantic Dagger, also known as “Daga Atlántica,” is formalized under a memorandum of understanding established in March 2025 between Argentina’s Joint Special Operations Command and its U.S. Counterpart. The initiative aims to enhance interoperability, facilitate expert exchange, and standardize special operations procedures in line with international norms.
Original Exercise Scope and Potential Assets
The initial concept for the exercise envisioned a substantial deployment of personnel and equipment. Potential U.S. Participation included elite units such as the Green Berets, Air Force Special Operations Command, and Marine Special Operations Command. Strategic transport aircraft like the C-17 Globemaster III and C-130 Hercules, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, Oshkosh JLTV tactical vehicles, and unmanned systems were also under consideration. The possible deployment of an AC-130J Ghostrider gunship was also mentioned.
On the Argentine side, participation was anticipated from Army commando companies, Air Force special operations units, and Navy amphibious elements.
