US Strategic Petroleum Reserve Hits Lows as Experts Warn of $200 Oil Risk

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) fell to 2억 8,660만 배럴 by late August 2026, marking its lowest level since the early 1980s. Market strategist Ryan Detrick warned in a public statement on X that the depleted reserves heighten the risk of severe oil price spikes amid escalating global supply disruptions.

SPR Depletion Leaves Energy Markets Exposed

The strategic reserve acts as a critical buffer against sudden supply shocks in global energy markets. According to EIA data, aggressive drawdowns over recent administrative cycles have reduced the reserve from 4억 1,500만 배럴 recorded in early March down to 2억 8,600만 배럴 by August 28, 2026. Market strategist Ryan Detrick noted that utilizing these stockpiles has previously helped cap extreme price surges, but cautioned that the remaining volume may no longer suffice if geopolitical conflicts persist.

Economist Peter Schiff echoed these concerns regarding vulnerability to future supply shocks. According to Schiff, prolonged depletion leaves the domestic market ill-prepared for unexpected geopolitical disruptions, raising questions about price trajectories ahead of upcoming federal election cycles.

EIA Revises 2026 and 2027 Price Forecasts Upward

In response to tightening global inventories and ongoing Middle East supply constraints, the EIA updated its outlook in September 2026. The agency raised its 2026 Brent crude oil price forecast to $91 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) to $84.65 per barrel, representing an upward revision of roughly 5%.

The upward adjustments reflect prolonged conflict involving Iran, which has disrupted regional energy infrastructure and restricted oil transit through key chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz. Global crude inventories have contracted by approximately 4억 배럴 through 2026, with further declines anticipated by the end of the year.

Actual market trading has outpaced baseline forecasts. Front-month Brent crude futures recently traded at $107.86 per barrel, while October WTI futures reached $102.63 per barrel, underscoring the immediate premium currently priced into physical and futures markets.
