Celtic Punk Takes Center Stage at Vans Warped Tour Mexico City 2026
The Vans Warped Tour, a cornerstone of the alternative music scene, is set to make its debut in Mexico City on September 12th and 13th, 2026, at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez [1]. Among the diverse lineup, two prominent Celtic punk bands, Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys, will bring a unique blend of traditional instrumentation and punk energy to the festival [2].
What is Celtic Punk?
Celtic punk is a fusion of traditional Celtic folk music and the raw energy of punk rock. It incorporates instruments like the fiddle, accordion, and tin whistle alongside the typical punk rock instrumentation, creating a sound that is both energetic and deeply rooted in Celtic traditions.
Flogging Molly: A Legacy of Irish-American Punk
Flogging Molly, formed in Los Angeles in 1997, is a seven-member band led by Irish vocalist Dave King [2]. The band honed its sound at Molly Malone’s pub, blending punk rock with traditional instruments like the violin, accordion, and banjo. Despite a health scare in early 2025 when King suffered a brain hemorrhage, he has made a full recovery and is set to return to the stage [2]. Flogging Molly operates under its own label, Borstal Beat Records, and is known for albums like Drunken Lullabies and Swagger, which explore themes of exile, rebellion, and Irish history.
Dropkick Murphys: Boston’s Celtic Punk Icons
Dropkick Murphys, celebrating 30 years as leading exponents of Celtic punk, hails from the working-class neighborhoods of Boston [2]. Led by Ken Casey, the band achieved international recognition with hits like “Tessie” and the platinum-selling anthem “I’m Shipping Up to Boston,” featured in the film The Departed. Beyond their music, Dropkick Murphys are actively involved in philanthropic function through the Claddagh Fund, supporting veterans and vulnerable children. In 2026, they will continue their anniversary tour, culminating in their traditional St. Patrick’s Week concerts in Boston.
