ONE Veszprém HC Faces Pressure After Champions League Group Stage Performance

The Hungarian handball powerhouse, ONE Veszprém HC, is bracing for potential repercussions after a disappointing performance in the group phase of the EHF Champions League. Despite boasting a star-studded squad, the team finished fifth in their group with a 14-14 points record, falling short of expectations.

Managing Director Announces Potential Penalties

Csaba Bartha, managing director of Veszprém, has issued a stern warning to the team, stating that “harsh penalties” will be imposed if they fail to achieve their seasonal goals. Bartha emphasized the club’s long-standing tradition and history, asserting that such results are unacceptable. Veszprém KC, as the club is also known, has won the Hungarian Championship a record 28 times and the Hungarian Cup a record 31 times.

“I am of the opinion that direct and decisive intervention on my part is now required, but still not in terms of tactics or training,” Bartha stated in a press release. “I have decided to take collective responsibility and impose harsh penalties if the goals we set together at the beginning of the season are not achieved.”

Playoff Challenges Ahead

Veszprém now faces a challenging playoff schedule, beginning with a matchup against Paris Saint-Germain. A victory would then lead to a quarter-final clash against Füchse Berlin, who defeated Veszprém twice during the group phase (32:31 and 38:34).

Squad Overhaul and Fan Support

The club underwent a significant roster change prior to the current season, with 17 positional changes made at the request of the coaching staff. Bartha clarified that the departure of Ludovic Fabregas was an exception, and all other personnel decisions were driven by the coaching team.

Addressing the fans, Bartha acknowledged their disappointment and emphasized the importance of their continued support. “Veszprém has always been characterized by fighting spirit, hard work and cohesion,” he said. “Our goal is not only to overcome the crisis, but to restore the reputation of the stable, strong and internationally competitive club. But we cannot do this alone. We need our fans for that, we need you too!”

Looking Ahead

Bartha indicated that a “more far-reaching decision” regarding the team’s future may be made at the end of the season, depending on the results. He concluded by reiterating his commitment to applying pressure and holding the team accountable for their performance.
