Australia has rested Test captain Pat Cummins alongside fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood from its upcoming limited-overs fixtures against England, prioritizing physical recovery ahead of a grueling international schedule that features 10 Tests in 14 weeks. Selectors omitted the pace trio from both the one-day international and Twenty20 squads announced on Monday.
Workload Management Dictates Squad Selections
The decision stems from a demanding phase of the national team’s calendar. George Bailey, chair of selectors, explained that the team will have spent more than 100 days on the road from the start of the Perth Test through the conclusion of the 150th anniversary Test against England.
To mitigate fatigue, key batsmen Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Josh Inglis, Cooper Connolly, and all-rounder Cameron Green will also be managed through the T20 series. Nathan Ellis misses out on the ODI squad as he continues his recovery from a side strain.
New Faces Earn Call-Ups for White-Ball Series
Rising Western Australian paceman Mahli Beardman has earned a maiden national one-day selection.
The T20 squad features Tim David alongside hard-hitting opening batter Jake Fraser-McGurk, who returns to the format for the first time since 2025. Young New South Wales batter Lachlan Shaw also joins the T20 team for the first time following strong showings in the BBL and on the Australia A tour to India.
