A 16-year-old, five-pound dog named Ellie was taken from her front yard in Warren, Michigan, last Monday, ClickOnDetroit reported. Rebecca and Mike Jones said the dog went missing while Mike stepped outside to take out the trash during Monday night football and to move his work vehicle closer to the house. Rebecca and the dogs moved to the garage during those activities, and at some point, Ellie got out before a neighbor reported seeing a woman get out of a car, enter the property, and take the animal.
Disappearance and Return With Severe Injuries
The family did not see Ellie again until Saturday, when they received a call informing them that the dog had been dropped off at UrgentVet. A worker at the veterinary office stated that a woman walked in and handed over Ellie, claiming she had found the dog after it was hit, took it home to wash it, and then brought it to the clinic. Clinic staff checked Ellie for a microchip and contacted her owners, describing her injuries as burns. She looked like someone skinned our dog,
Mike Jones said.
Rebecca Jones described Ellie as a feisty pet who thinks she is a huge dog and has served as a source of comfort through difficult times, noting, That dog has helped me with so many hard times in my life.
Ellie Recovers as Police Investigate Animal Injuries
Following her drop-off at UrgentVet, Ellie was transferred to Oakland Veterinary Referral Services for ongoing treatment. Recent photographs show her injuries wrapped in bandages with a tube coming from her nose, though her owners report that she is getting stronger. Listen, if you did it on accident or whatever, just all we want is to turn yourself in,
Mike said. It’s the right thing to do. This is a 5-pound animal that is not a threat to anyone, not even herself.
The Warren Police Department confirmed that the case remains under investigation. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Detective Palmer at 586-574-4841. Meanwhile, the family has launched a fundraiser to help cover Ellie’s veterinary bills, and staff at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services noted that direct donations can also be made through their website by visiting the contact section, clicking online payments, and entering Ellie’s information.
