WhatsApp is rolling out granular data management tools for Android users to combat device storage bloat caused by media and message histories.
The messaging platform, owned by Meta, began pushing out these features to Android users in August. The updates target high-consumption areas like media-heavy group chats and broadcast channels, offering new ways to audit and purge unwanted files without deleting entire chat histories.
Channel Storage Cleanup Tools and Media Filtering
A core addition to the Android application is a dedicated channel storage cleanup tool, spotted in beta version 2.26.30.4. This feature allows users to sort and delete media files stored within specific broadcast channels by filtering content into categories such as photos, videos, stickers, and voice messages.
Users can access these controls through two distinct navigation paths within the app. The management settings are available directly inside individual channel info screens, or through a centralized hub in the updates tab. The updates tab interface supports multi-select capabilities, enabling users to manage media across multiple subscribed channels simultaneously.
To prevent accidental data loss, WhatsApp has incorporated a safeguard for important updates. Content marked by the user as “Starred Updates” is automatically excluded from bulk cleaning operations, ensuring favorite media remains intact on the device.
Automated Storage Rules and Notification Alerts
Complementing manual filters, subsequent test builds like beta version 2.26.19.4 introduce automated storage management options. Users can configure channel media to delete automatically after a designated timeframe, such as 30 days.
Alongside storage housekeeping, the platform is refining user onboarding for broadcast subscriptions. When a user follows a new channel, a prominent notification alert now appears immediately, prompting them to configure alert preferences right after joining.
Expanded Message Revocation and Deletion Timers
Beyond channel-specific tools, current Android beta releases test adjustments to general messaging controls. Beta version 2.22.24.9 features an overhauled menu for disappearing messages, retaining standard intervals of 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days while improving interface clarity.
More notably, WhatsApp is testing an extension to the time limit for the “Delete for Everyone” function. While users previously faced a strict cutoff to recall accidentally sent messages, testing points toward an expanded window stretching to 2 days and 12 hours.
These features are currently rolling out selectively to participants in the official Android beta program. A public release across the stable version of the app is expected once these testing phases conclude.
