Wicked Returns to Rochester: A Behind-the-Scenes Look
After a nine-year absence, the blockbuster musical Wicked has returned to Rochester, New York, captivating audiences at the West Herr Auditorium Theatre. The production, running through March 1, offers a glimpse behind the curtain, revealing the artistry and dedication that bring the beloved story to life.
The Transformation of Elphaba
Central to the show’s magic is the transformation of actor Jesse Davidson into the iconic character of Elphaba. Davidson shared that the extensive makeup process is surprisingly calming. “It actually is very relaxing,” Davidson said. “These brushes are so much softer than they look, so they don’t feel like a paintbrush that you’d use to paint a house or paint siding with or anything. It’s actually super soft.”
The “greenification” of Elphaba is a multi-stage process overseen by production makeup supervisor Tishonna Ferguson. Ferguson ensures a seamless application, starting with a base layer of green, almost like a watercolor primer. This is followed by a green cream foundation to set the color. “So when I come in, it’s just setting up our makeup station and making sure that she has everything that she needs for us to be able to just gain through the makeup seamlessly,” Ferguson explained.
A Pivotal Role and a Childhood Dream
For Davidson, the role of Elphaba holds deep personal significance. She recounted attending a matinee performance of Wicked as a child, sparking her passion for musical theatre. “This role was kind of a pivotal moment for me as a kid,” Davidson said. “And my mom pulled me out of school on a Wednesday and we went to the matinee, and it was like, Oh, I don’t just like this. I desire to do this.”
Rochester Embraces the Emerald City
The return of Wicked is being celebrated throughout Rochester. As part of RBTL’s 2025-26 season, downtown buildings with color-changing lights are encouraged to display green throughout the show’s run [City Magazine]. West Herr patrons can similarly enjoy themed drinks, such as a “Glinda” (sparkling rosé) or an “Elphaba” (a Midori sour), served by bartenders in witch hats [City Magazine].
