New “Wishbone” Pedestrian Bridge Over Lady Bird Lake Nears Completion in Austin
AUSTIN, Texas – Austin residents will soon have a new connection point along the Ann & Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail wiht the anticipated completion of the “wishbone” pedestrian bridge near the Longhorn Dam by the end of 2024. The project, a key component of the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, is designed to improve access and connectivity around Lady Bird Lake.
The uniquely shaped bridge will provide three access points to the popular trail: Longhorn Shores,Holly Shores,and the peninsula near Holly Shores.This configuration establishes a crucial north-south connection on the eastern edge of the lake, enhancing the trail experience for walkers, runners, and cyclists.
Funded by the $460 million transportation infrastructure bond approved by Austin voters in 2020, construction began in the summer of 2024. The project aims to alleviate congestion on existing trail sections and provide a more seamless experience for trail users. the bond package, approved as Proposition A, specifically allocated funds for improvements to Austin’s pedestrian and bicycle network, recognizing the growing demand for alternative transportation options.
Currently, crews are focused on final project elements, including the installation of benches within the bridge’s plaza areas and completing essential electrical work. Austin Mobility officials have confirmed that the existing traffic pattern on Canterbury Street will remain unchanged throughout the remainder of the construction phase, minimizing disruption to local traffic.
