Romanian Doorstopper Identified as a World-Record Amber Mass

A 3.5-kilogram chunk of rare rumanite amber that spent decades serving as a simple doorstop in a Romanian home has been officially recognized as the largest piece of its kind in the world, valued at roughly 1,1 million dollar (1 miljoen euro), reported.

Decades of Domestic Use and Unnoticed Burglary

The heavy reddish-brown stone was discovered by a woman in a stream bed in the rural Romanian village of Colți. For decades, she used the boulder simply to keep her front door from blowing shut in the wind. Even during a past burglary in which thieves stole valuable jewelry from the house, the intruders left the heavy amber chunk untouched where it sat in plain sight by the entrance, failing to recognize its material worth.

Museum Acquisition and Scientific Verification

The unassuming household object came to light in 1999 when it was offered for sale to the local Amber Museum in Colți. Following acquisition by the Romanian state, experts at the Historical Museum of Krakow in Poland—an institution specializing in semi-precious stones—analyzed the object and confirmed it as authentic rumanite, a rare variety of amber indigenous only to the Colți region. Formed from fossilized tree resin, the specimen is estimated to be between 38,5 and 70 million years old.

World Record Recognition in Buzau

On August 28, 2024, the World Records Academy officially certified the object as the largest piece of rumanite amber in the world. The stone has since been transferred from the museum in Colți to the collection of the Provinciaal Museum of Buzău. Daniel Costache, director of the museum in Buzău, called the discovery important for both scientific research and museum exhibition. While the Guinness World Record for the heaviest block of amber overall belongs to a 68,2-kilogram specimen housed in the Amber Museum of Gdańsk, Poland, the Colți find holds the distinct record specifically for the rare rumanite variety.
