Inside Yellowstone National Park, a colossal bulge the size of 279 football fields is growing and showing no signs of slowing down. It stretches across the northern rim of the Yellowstone Caldera and Gibbon Falls. It has grown by two and a half centimeters since last July alone. This phenomenon has reignited debates about a reawakening volcano beneath the surface.
Mike Poland, a senior scientist at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, regularly monitors the growing bulge. “It’s an area over 30 kilometers wide,” he described the phenomenon. To say that this protrusion is the size of Chicago sounds incredibly grandiose, but I think it’s stunning, even if it’s not particularly unusual.”

In Yellowstone Park is one of the most unstable countries in the world. There are constantly active volcanic, geothermal and hydrothermal forces fueling the world-famous geysers and hot springs.
Threat of eruption
So is this underground upwelling a warning that a supervolcano is about to erupt? According to Poland, there is currently no threat of an eruption. A similar deformation has occurred here several times in the past.
“It doesn’t mean the volcano is about to erupt,” confirmed Poland. “Yellowstone is just Yellowstone.”
