Yin Yoga for Hips and Hamstrings: A 13-Minute Practice to Release Tension

Do you experience tension in your lower body, particularly in your hips and hamstrings? This is often a result of prolonged sitting. A 13-minute yin yoga practice can provide the lengthening and loosening needed to alleviate this discomfort.

What is Yin Yoga?

Yin yoga focuses on quality over quantity. Unlike more dynamic yoga styles, yin yoga involves holding poses for longer periods—at least 2 minutes, and potentially longer depending on your schedule—to target deep connective tissues. This practice encourages a passive approach to stretching, allowing gravity to deepen the poses and release tension.

Props for Your Practice

For this practice, it’s helpful to have two blocks (or block-like props such as pillows or folded blankets) readily available to provide support and modify poses as needed.

Yin Yoga Sequence for Hips and Hamstrings

Straddle or Wide-Angled Seated Forward Bend

Begin by sitting on the long edge of your mat with your legs extended wide in a straddle-like position. Sit tall, gently rock forward onto your sit bones, and slowly bow forward. To deepen the stretch or provide support, place a prop underneath each knee. You can also use stacked blocks or pillows under your forearms or forehead for added comfort. Hold for 2 minutes or longer.

Fire Log Pose

Extend your left leg straight. Bend your right knee, hooking your right ankle just above your left knee joint. You can stay here, or deepen the pose by bending your left knee, bringing your left foot beneath your right knee so that your shins are stacked. For extra support, place a block under either or both knees. Hold for 2 minutes or longer.

Fire Log Forward Bend

From Fire Log Pose, either remain upright or add intensity by leaning forward, rounding your upper back, and walking your hands out in front of you. Hold for 1 minute.

Windshield Wipers

Walk your hands back in and press yourself upright. Then, bring your hands behind you and lean back. Separate your legs wide, keeping your feet flat on the mat. Allow both legs to fall from side to side in a windshield wiper motion, repeating 4 times on each side. After completing the repetitions, extend your right leg straight and cross your left ankle just above your right knee joint to return to Fire Log Pose on the opposite side. Finish with another set of Windshield Wipers.

Savasana

Lower yourself onto your back for Savasana (Corpse Pose). Relax and rest for 3-5 minutes, or as long as feels comfortable.

Closing

When you’re ready, gently stretch your body and exhale to soften. Draw your knees to your chest and roll onto your side in a fetal position. Press yourself up through your hands and return to a comfortable seated position. Bring your hands together at heart center, bow your head, and express gratitude for taking the time to care for yourself.
