Rashmita Sabar Dies After Childbirth Complications in Soradapalli
A 23-year-old woman named Rashmita Sabar died on Tuesday while being carried on a makeshift sling for nearly seven kilometers to a hospital after developing complications following childbirth in a remote village of Odisha’s Ganjam district.
The emergency unfolded in Soradapalli village, located under the Chandanpur gram panchayat in the Beguniapada block. Sabar gave birth to a baby girl at her home but soon suffered excessive bleeding and a sudden deterioration in her health.
Because the village lacks an all-weather motorable road, an ambulance could not reach the location to transport the patient. Left without transportation alternatives, family members and local villagers placed Sabar on a makeshift sling and attempted to carry her toward the Sumandal hospital. The group was heading toward a hospital nearly seven kilometers away when she died midway through the journey.
Newborn Baby Treatment at Kodala Hospital
Following the fatal transport attempt, the newborn baby girl survived and was admitted to Kodala hospital for medical care. The infant is currently undergoing treatment at the facility.
Road Connectivity Crisis in Ganjam and Rayagada
The tragedy has focused fresh scrutiny on the lack of basic road connectivity in rural parts of Odisha and the persistent hazards residents face when trying to access emergency medical care. The absence of motorable roads and delayed ambulance access frequently prove fatal, particularly for pregnant women and patients requiring urgent intervention.
The incident closely mirrors a similar medical emergency in October, when a 35-year-old pregnant woman in the Kashipur block of Rayagada district was carried in a sling for nearly five kilometers to reach an ambulance. That patient ultimately delivered a stillborn baby at the Rayagada district headquarters hospital.
