Zavegepant Relieves Migraine Pain in Asian Adults Within Two Hours

Twenty-three percent of Asian adults treated with a single dose of zavegepant nasal spray were free of migraine pain two hours after treatment, compared with 14 percent of those given placebo, according to a Phase 3 trial published in The Journal of Headache and Pain, 2 Minute Medicine reported.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study enrolled 1,346 adults aged 18 and older across multiple centers in Asia, each with at least a one-year history of migraine with or without aura. Participants received either 10 mg of intranasal zavegepant or a matching placebo. Beyond pain freedom, 52.7 percent of the zavegepant group reported absence of their most bothersome symptom at two hours, versus 39.9 percent in the placebo group, a difference of 12.8 percentage points.

Rapid Relief Sustained Over 48 Hours

Zavegepant, a calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonist and the only non-oral gepant, also outperformed placebo at earlier and later time points. The treatment significantly relieved pain at 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 24 hours, and 48 hours post-dose, according to the study led by researchers including S. Yu and H.S. Moon.

Side Effects Mostly Mild, Led by Taste Disturbance

The most common adverse event was dysgeusia, reported by 3.7 percent of zavegepant patients versus 0.3 percent of placebo recipients, followed by urinary tract infection at 2.1 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively. Three serious adverse events occurred, none considered treatment-related, and there was no significant difference in total adverse events between groups.

Why This Population Matters

Migraine affects roughly 14 to 15 percent of the global population and ranks as the second leading cause of years lived with disability worldwide. While zavegepant’s efficacy had been established in U.S. Phase 2/3 trials, researchers noted it remained unclear whether the same results would hold in an East Asian population until this study.

Questions Readers Ask About Zavegepant in Asian Adults

The study randomized 1,346 Asian adults 1:1 to zavegepant 10 mg or placebo, with a mean age of about 39 years and roughly three-quarters female in each group.

What is a gepant? Gepants are calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonists; zavegepant is delivered intranasally and is the only non-oral option in this class, which matters for patients who cannot take pills during an attack.

The findings appeared in The Journal of Headache and Pain on October 26, 2026, under DOI 10.1186/s10194-026-02556-z.

The results extend zavegepant’s established U.S. trial record to an East Asian population, closing a gap researchers had flagged about whether the drug’s benefits would translate across regions.
