Zohor Municipality Proposes Modern Stadium Upgrade

The municipality of Zohor has unveiled an architectural study for a comprehensive football stadium renovation designed to meet Slovak Football Association Category 1 conditions and a lower UEFA license, Šport.sk reported. Martin Zálesňák stated that the municipality is currently processing the construction intent and expects to finalize administrative paperwork by the end of the year.

Infrastructure Upgrades and Multi-Sport Facilities

The plans feature a completely renovated main grandstand with a seating capacity of 364 spectators. The ground floor will house four primary match football dressing rooms equipped with full facilities designed to accommodate matches up to the third league and other regional competitions. The upper floor will feature four additional locker rooms tailored primarily for the local hokejbal club, reflecting the sport’s long-standing tradition in Zohor. These upper rooms can also double as youth football changing rooms or spaces for cultural events, as the stadium grounds include a stage for performers.

Funding Strategy and Municipal Priorities

While the municipality could finance portions of the project from its own budget, Mayor Zálesňák noted that Zohor will seek external funding. Officials are waiting for upcoming subsidy calls from either the Sport Support Fund or European funds. The administration must carefully weigh municipal co-financing capabilities against another major sports infrastructure priority on the table: building a new gymnasium for the local elementary school. If European grants become available for the school gym, the village intends to apply for Sport Support Fund contributions specifically for the stadium.

Expert Consultation and Regional Significance

Local leaders developed the project in cooperation with Milan Vorčák, chairman of the Slovak Football Association’s Committee for Stadiums and Playgrounds. Although FC Zohor currently plays in the sixth tier without higher competitive aspirations, the municipality designed the venue to meet third-league technical standards to future-proof the investment. Beyond serving the local club and neighboring squads—such as FKM Karlova Ves, which plays home matches in Zohor, and past youth tenants from Dúbravka—the upgraded venue aims to host training matches for second-league and top-tier professional teams.
