Passkeys Get a Boost: 1Password Integration Now available in Windows 11 Insider builds
Microsoft continues its push towards a passwordless future with expanded support for passkeys, a more secure and convenient authentication method. Building on the foundation laid in Windows 11 as autumn 2023,the latest Insider Preview builds are introducing a notable enhancement: direct integration with popular password managers, starting with 1Password. This development addresses a key user need – seamless management and portability of these next-generation credentials.
Expanding Passkey Functionality Through API Access
Last year, Microsoft announced plans too open up passkey functionality through an API, allowing third-party password managers to securely store and manage them. This move recognized that users often rely on these tools to organize their digital lives, and integrating passkeys into existing workflows was crucial for widespread adoption. The initial commitment included collaboration with both 1Password and Bitwarden, and the 1Password integration is now entering a testing phase.
How to Access the 1Password Integration
currently, the integration is available for testing within Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.4520 (Beta Channel) and 26200.5670 (Dev Channel). To participate, users must first download a beta version of 1Password specifically designed for testing – available here.
The connection is established within Windows 11’s settings app, under Accounts, and a new Advanced options subsection. After enabling the connection, users will be prompted to verify their identity using Windows Hello, ensuring a secure link between the operating system and their password manager.
Managing Passkeys Across Platforms
Once connected, users can seamlessly transfer existing passkeys to 1Password for secure storage. Furthermore, the integration allows for the storage of newly created passkeys directly within the password manager during the sign-in process. This provides adaptability, allowing users to choose where each passkey is saved and even utilize multiple password managers if desired. This addresses a common concern about vendor lock-in and empowers users with greater control over their authentication methods.
The Future of Windows 11: 25H2 and Beyond
The Dev Channel build already carries the designation of the 25H2 version, recently confirmed by microsoft. This signifies the next major feature update to Windows 11, anticipated for release in Autumn 2024. Microsoft accounts already fully support passkeys, even enabling a completely passwordless Windows experience. recent reports indicate that over 2.2 billion passwords are compromised each year (source: Have I Been Pwned), highlighting the urgent need for more secure authentication methods like passkeys.
This integration with 1Password represents a significant step towards realizing that vision, offering a more secure and user-friendly alternative to traditional passwords.
