Trump Administration Faced Scrutiny Over App Blocking and ICE Facility Conditions

The Trump administration is under increasing scrutiny regarding its immigration policies, facing criticism for alleged coercion of tech companies to block apps used to monitor Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) activities, as well as for conditions within ICE detention facilities.

DOJ Accused of Coercing Tech Companies

Representative Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, is investigating the Department of Justice (DOJ) over claims that it pressured Apple and Google to remove apps that allowed the public to track ICE and CBP operations. Raskin questioned why the DOJ would “violat[e] the First Amendment by coercing big tech to block access to lawful apps that the American people use to record, report, and monitor the actions of our own government officers?”

One such app, ICEBlock, functioned similarly to Waze, alerting users to nearby ICE activity and allowing them to share real-time information. Despite initially being approved for the Apple App Store, ICEBlock was removed shortly after the DOJ contacted Apple with a demand to do so. Attorney General Pam Bondi reportedly threatened the app’s developer, warning them about potential legal repercussions.

Concerns Raised About Baltimore ICE Facility

Conditions at an ICE holding facility in Baltimore have also drawn criticism. Congressman Jamie Raskin described the facility as “extremely inhumane” after a surprise inspection. He reported seeing 55 to 60 men crammed into a room the size of an average living room.

A whistleblower, who spoke to WUSA9 under the condition of anonymity, detailed disturbing conditions, including detainees lying in feces and urine, and women being provided with diapers instead of sanitary products.

Nine members of Maryland’s congressional delegation have sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem demanding answers regarding the conditions at the Baltimore facility, requesting detailed information by February 26th.

Ongoing Investigations

These developments occur amidst broader challenges to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, including scrutiny of actions in Minneapolis and the use of force against protesters.
