FA Expected to Back Controversial Saudi Arabia 2034 World Cup Bid
The Football Association (FA) is set to throw its weight behind Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, despite ongoing concerns surrounding the Kingdom’s human rights record. The FA is also expected to support a joint bid from Spain, Portugal, and Morocco for the 2030 tournament.
While the FA has not officially confirmed its position, BBC Sport has learned that the governing body for English football will back both bids during Wednesday’s online FIFA Congress. The Congress is where the hosts for both tournaments will be officially confirmed.
Expect Accusation of Hypocrisy
According to sources, some senior FA officials were apprehensive about facing accusations of hypocrisy if they didn’t support Saudi Arabia, yet still advocated for England’s participation in the event.
A Surprisingly Formality World Cup Process
Saudi Arabia is the solitary bidder for the 2034 World Cup, making its victory a formality. The 2030 World Cup is anticipated to be awarded to the unopposed joint bid from Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, with early matches potentially hosted in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
Rather than a traditional vote, the ratification process is believed to involve acclamation. Federations in favor will demonstrate their support by applauding.
Controversial Support for Saudi Arabia
The FA’s support for Saudi Arabia’s bid is bound to be controversial given the Kingdom’s contentious human rights record and discriminatory laws. Delegates will vote simultaneously on both bids – supporting or opposing both campaigns without the option for separate votes.
