Modern Upper East Side Condominium Project Rises at 213 East 83rd Street
Demolition is nearing completion at 213 East 83rd Street, making way for a new eight-unit condominium building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Developed by AVENU and designed by Isaac Stern Architects, the seven-story structure will span 27,000 square feet, with each of the eight condominium units exceeding 1,500 square feet.
Project Details
The 85-foot-tall building will similarly feature a 30-foot-long rear yard. The 5,000-square-foot property is situated between Second and Third Avenues. Demolition of the former church structure was largely completed by late spring, leaving only interior sections to be removed.
Design Evolution
The building’s design has been updated from previous iterations. While maintaining a symmetrical layout, the original plans for a central stack of balconies have been replaced with a uniform grid of arched, floor-to-ceiling windows. A loggia terrace will be featured on the seventh story, behind glass railings and shrubbery.
History of the Site
Prior to the development, the site was occupied by St. Elizabeth Church. Under the guidance of Cardinal Dolan, the St. Elizabeth congregation relocated to the Church of St. Monica at 413 East 79th Street in 2015 due to declining attendance. AVENU purchased the property for $11.8 million following the congregation’s relocation.
Additional Design and Construction Details
Paris Forino is serving as the interior designer for the project. The development is also utilizing air rights transferred from the adjacent property at 211 East 83rd Street, which will also undergo renovation as part of the project.
Transportation Access
The nearest subway station is the Q train at 86th Street along Second Avenue, accessible at the corner of East 83rd Street.
