23 Rescued After Ice Shelf Breaks Apart in Georgian Bay

Twenty-three people were rescued on Sunday, March 8, 2026, after a large ice shelf broke away from the shore of Georgian Bay near Balmy Beach, Ontario. The incident prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple emergency services.

Incident Details

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to reports of individuals stranded on the ice shortly before 12 p.m. Near Balmy Beach, north of Owen Sound. According to the OPP, the ice shelf was carried approximately two kilometers (1.2 miles) from shore by wind and currents before fracturing into several sections, partially submerging some of those stranded in the frigid water.

Rescue Operation

Two OPP helicopters were deployed to airlift all 23 individuals to safety by approximately 2:30 p.m. Emergency crews involved in the rescue included the OPP, fire crews, paramedics, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the air ambulance service Ornge. The Cobble Beach Golf Course provided its facilities for aviation units and triage response.

Injuries and Condition

While several people suffered from hypothermia, authorities reported that all 23 individuals are expected to develop a full recovery. The OPP stated the situation became life-threatening for some due to the cold water temperatures.

Warnings and Safety

Authorities are urging the public to stay off the ice and avoid the area while emergency crews continue to monitor the situation.
