University of Michigan Shells Out $2 Million for Investigations into Football Coach, Athletic Department

Ann Arbor, MI – The University of Michigan has expended over $2 million in legal fees to the law firm of Jenner & Block as it investigates the circumstances surrounding the firing of former football coach Sherrone Moore and conducts a broader assessment of the university’s athletic department, according to records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Investigation Details and Costs

The Chicago-based firm, retained by the university in December 2025, is handling two “related but distinct” investigations. These include a review of Moore’s conduct and a comprehensive evaluation of the culture within the athletic department. The university aims to “strengthen our athletics program moving forward” through these investigations, according to a statement from UM spokesperson Paul Corliss.

Invoices reveal the following payments to Jenner & Block:

  • December 3, 2025: $61,887
  • January 29, 2026: $1,060,000 (approximately)
  • January 31, 2026: $933,927

The total cost to date exceeds $2 million and the university has indicated that fees are expected to increase. A novel agreement between the university and Jenner & Block includes potential discounts if total fees surpass $5 million or $10 million.

Background of the Investigations

Sherrone Moore was fired on December 10, 2025, following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. He was subsequently arrested and charged with third-degree home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering related to an incident at the staffer’s residence. Moore maintains his innocence, and the case is ongoing.

The investigation extends beyond Moore’s case to examine the overall culture within the University of Michigan’s athletic department, which has faced numerous controversies in recent years. These include issues involving the athletic doctor Robert Anderson’s abuse, alleged hacking by former offensive coordinator Matt Weiss, incidents involving the men’s basketball and hockey coaches, and NCAA violations.

University Response and Investigation Timeline

University officials estimate the investigation will be completed this spring, though a definitive timeline has not been shared. Interim President Domenico Grasso has acknowledged the “anger and disillusionment” within the campus community and emphasized the university’s commitment to maintaining an environment of respect and integrity.

The university has established a contact point for tips related to the investigation: UMconcerns@jenner.com.

Comparison to Other University Investigations

The $2 million spent by Michigan is substantial, but comparable to costs incurred by other universities facing similar investigations. Penn State paid $8 million for the Freeh report related to the Jerry Sandusky scandal and an additional $27 million in related legal fees. Michigan State University spent approximately $19 million on investigations related to the Larry Nassar sexual abuse case.
