Dresden-Banjul Rally: Impressions from Gambia and the Work of the DBO
After three intensive weeks traveling through seven countries (and for some, even more) across two continents, sailing the Atlantic, navigating challenging roads, conquering mountains, racing through desert sands, and experiencing vibrant African cities, we’ve spent the last week in Gambia – still brimming with stories and covered in dust.
These few days have provided profound impressions, highlighting both the incredible friendliness of the Gambian people and the significant poverty present in the country.
Between arrival, the auction, and celebratory events, we also explored the core mission of the rally: the work of the Dresden-Banjul Institution (DBO), a dedicated NGO. We had the opportunity to visit several projects supported by the DBO.
The Kundembo Health Post in Gunjur serves not only as a health center but also prioritizes education on sensitive topics like sexuality, circumcision, health, and hygiene. This was a key focus for its founder and leader, Sol, who sadly passed away.Contraception, puberty, vaccinations, and similar subjects often considered taboo are rarely discussed in Gambian society or schools – making this educational work notably vital.
As mid-last year and the beginning of this year, the health post has expanded to include an eye clinic, a dental clinic, and a maternity ward, thanks to generous financial donations and in-kind contributions.
The new director and doctor,Dr.Fatima Bouriss, and Dr. Faburama Jambang, have continued sol’s work, implementing improvements such as raising hygiene standards to European levels and meticulously inventorying medicines, bandages, and medical supplies.
We also visited two schools, both initially established as nursery schools, or preschools. These schools teach English, as Mandinka or other West African languages are typically spoken only at home. Proficiency in English is crucial for success in later schooling.
As nursery schools are not included in the free basic school system, they rely on financial and material donations to keep fees affordable for low-income families and to cover teacher salaries and building maintenance.
