4K Blu-ray Sales Rise as Streaming Dominates Home Entertainment

Despite the continued dominance of streaming services, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs experienced a surprising 12% sales increase in the US in 2025, signaling a small but notable rebound for physical media. However, overall physical media revenue—including DVDs and Blu-rays—still declined by 9.3% to $870 million, according to a new report from the Digital Entertainment Group (DEG).

Streaming Remains King

The DEG report highlights the overwhelming prevalence of streaming, with subscription services accounting for over 92% of all U.S. Consumer spending on home entertainment in 2025. Total spending on streaming reached $57.5 billion, a 19.8% increase from the previous year. This growth underscores the convenience and accessibility that streaming platforms offer to consumers.

Resilience in Physical Media

While the overall trend for physical media remains downward, the 12% increase in 4K Blu-ray sales demonstrates a continued demand for high-quality home viewing experiences. The DEG noted that 4K Blu-ray sales contributed to “some resilience” in the physical media sector. The decline in optical disc sales slowed considerably, falling 9.3% in 2025 compared to a 23.4% drop from 2023 to 2024.

The Quality Advantage of 4K Blu-ray

One key factor driving the continued appeal of 4K Blu-ray is the superior picture quality compared to streaming. While streaming services like Apple TV+ can reach peak bitrates of around 40Mbps (typically between 15-31Mbps), 4K Blu-ray discs can achieve bitrates up to 144Mbps. This translates to greater detail, more vibrant colors, and an overall enhanced visual experience.

Industry Trends

Recent industry developments include reports that Sony had planned to end production of blank physical Blu-ray discs, which were later found to be inaccurate. LG discontinued manufacturing physical Blu-ray players in 2023, leaving Sony and Panasonic as major manufacturers in the space.

Although streaming is expected to remain the dominant force in home entertainment, 4K Blu-ray will likely continue to appeal to videophiles and collectors who prioritize visual fidelity. While sales numbers are projected to gradually decline, the format offers a viewing experience that currently surpasses the capabilities of most streaming services.
