Ireland’s Deposit Return Scheme: Recycling Success in Seven Months

Ireland’s innovative Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) has made a significant impact in its first seven months of operation, exceeding expectations for plastic bottle and aluminum can recycling.

Millions of Containers Returned

According to the Department of Environment, Climate, and Communications, a staggering 635 million containers have been returned to the DRS since its launch in February 2023.

This impressive number translates to €110 million in deposits returned to customers, demonstrating the public’s strong engagement with the scheme.

Rapid Growth and High Collection Rates

While only 2 million containers were returned in February, the number has skyrocketed, reaching 112 million in August. This represents a 56-fold increase and a collection rate of 73% – the equivalent of nearly three-quarters of all beverage containers sold that month.

The scheme’s success is attributed to several factors, including:

  • Clear public information campaigns highlighting the benefits of the DRS.
  • Convenient return points at participating retailers.
  • The financial incentive of receiving deposits back for each returned container.

Positive Impact on the Environment

The DRS is already making a tangible difference in reducing litter and protecting Ireland’s environment.

The Irish Business Against Litter survey reported a 30% decrease in discarded drinks cans and a 20% reduction in plastic bottles on streets due to the scheme.

Furthermore, Coastwatch has observed a significant decrease in plastic bottles and aluminum cans washing ashore, highlighting the scheme’s positive impact on Ireland’s coastlines.

Government and Operator Praise the Success

“We are delighted to see that the Irish public have adapted so quickly to the Deposit Return Scheme,” said Ossian Smyth, Minister of State at the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications.

“This early success demonstrates the trust that Irish people have in the scheme. The positive data provides a very early indication of progress. It is already having a significant impact on the Irish environment.”

Ciaran Foley, Chief Executive of Re-turn, the company operating the DRS, echoed the sentiment, stating, “The August figures show how far the scheme has come in terms of participation and support.”

“We’re focused on building long-term success and look forward to seeing the continued positive effects of deposit return in littering prevention, community initiatives, and its contribution to a more sustainable Ireland.”
