Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League Shelters 64 Dogs in Palm Beach County Rescue
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League, in collaboration with Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control, has taken in 64 dogs from an overcrowded home in West Palm Beach, Florida. The rescue operation, which took place on March 25, 2026, began with a report of approximately 38 dogs, but quickly escalated upon arrival at the residence.
From Concern to Crisis: The Scale of the Rescue
Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control initially alerted Peggy Adams to a potential intake of 38 dogs. However, upon arriving at the home located at 608 29th Street, the rescue team discovered a significantly larger situation. A total of 64 dogs were found living in the house, requiring immediate care and attention.
“It is hard to believe, you know, 64 dogs in a house with limited finances, limited resources. That’s not an uncomplicated thing to do,” stated David Walesky, Assistant Director of Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control.
A Willing Surrender, Not a Case of Abuse
Juan Pajares, the resident of the home, explained that he had been taking in stray dogs for the past 15 years. Authorities have classified the situation as animal hoarding, but emphasized that there were no signs of animal abuse or neglect. Pajares willingly surrendered the dogs to the rescue organizations.
Walesky noted, “My understanding is they were loose in the house and he had removed most of his furniture to be more accommodating for the animals and to create a good environment for them. We didn’t spot any intent for animal cruelty. He clearly loved these animals.”
Pajares shared that he struggled to identify homes for the dogs due to them being strays and not purebreds. He reportedly spent approximately $120 on dog food every three days to care for the animals.
Peggy Adams Steps In: Providing Lifesaving Care
“Cases like this are a stark reminder of how quickly situations can escalate beyond control, leaving animals in urgent require of help,” said Sue Berry, CEO of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.
Peggy Adams is currently providing comprehensive veterinary care to all 64 dogs, including examinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and treatment for any medical conditions. The rescue league confirmed that some of the dogs have dental issues and skin conditions, but no serious medical issues were immediately identified.
According to Peggy Adams, they have taken in 50 of the dogs, whereas others were distributed to Furry Friends and Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control. Pajares was permitted to keep nine of the dogs. Sadly, one older dog with mobility issues had to be euthanized.
