Northeastern University’s Roux Institute Campus Construction Progresses in Portland, Maine
Portland, Maine – Construction of Northeastern University’s Roux Institute campus in Portland is on track for completion in late 2027, with students expected to begin classes in the spring of 2028. The $500 million project, situated on the former B&M Baked Beans factory site, is transforming the city’s waterfront and promises to be a hub for technological innovation and entrepreneurship.
A New Landmark for Portland
The Roux Institute, a graduate campus and research center affiliated with Northeastern University, is already operating from a temporary location at 100 Fore Street in downtown Portland. The Roux Institute focuses on driving innovation at the intersection of technology, data, and the life sciences. The new 250,000-square-foot campus will significantly expand the institute’s capacity for research and education.
Construction Update: On Time and On Budget
As of March 2026, construction is proceeding as planned. Chris Mallett, chief administrative officer for the Roux Institute, confirmed the project remains on budget and on schedule. More than 150 contractors are currently on site, installing metal columns, beams, and girders, with the building’s structure already reaching 155 feet in height. The building’s design, resembling the front of a cruise ship, is becoming a prominent feature of Portland’s skyline, visible from Tukey’s Bridge on Interstate 295.
From Baked Beans to Innovation Labs
The historic B&M Baked Beans factory building, a 13.5-acre site with a long history, will be renovated and rebranded as Lunder Innovation Labs. The vision is to create an incubation and acceleration space for early-stage companies, with the potential to house 50 to 100 start-ups concurrently. The Roux Institute is integrating the century-vintage factory building into the new campus.
Campus Features and Infrastructure
The new campus will include a parking garage with space for over 600 cars and a daycare center for 50 children. The Maine Department of Transportation is constructing a new off-ramp from I-295 to provide direct access to the Roux Institute campus. A new Christmas tree will adorn the roof of the renovated factory building, continuing a local tradition.
The Roux Institute’s Impact
The Roux Institute aims to be a tech talent and innovation hub for Maine and beyond. Northeastern University’s Roux Institute integrates graduate-level learning, research, industry partnerships, and entrepreneurship. The institute currently has 646 graduate students enrolled in high-tech programs and has supported the creation of 140 startups. It has also secured $40 million in funded research and awarded $35 million in scholarships.
Looking Ahead
The completion of the Roux Institute campus in 2027 will mark a significant milestone for Portland and Northeastern University. The project is expected to drive economic growth, attract talent, and foster innovation in the region, solidifying Maine’s position as a growing center for technology and entrepreneurship.
