Deezer Study Reveals Confusion and Concern Around AI-Generated Music

Deezer, the global music experience platform, has commissioned the first study in the world covering perceptions and attitudes towards music generated by artificial intelligence. Made by Ipsos near 9,000 people in 8 countries – United States, Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Germany and Japan – it highlights a strong expectation for the labeling of 100% AI music and the need to ensure fair treatment and remuneration for artists and authors whose works are used to train AI models.

First, all participants were asked to listen to three tracks and determine whether or not they were entirely AI-generated – 97% of respondents failed.

A majority (71%) said they surprised by these results and more than half (52%) have felt discomfort at the idea of not being able to tell the difference. The main results of the study are presented below.

Deezer has taken a unique approach to AI in the music industry, defending the rights of artists while ensuring openness for fans – the company is currently the only streaming platform to clearly detect and label 100% AI-generated content.

Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer states: “Deezer has been at the forefront of implementing solutions that ensure transparency and limit the negative impact of the influx of fully AI-generated content in music streaming. The results of this study clearly show that people care about music and want to know whether they are listening to a piece created by a human or an AI. There is also no doubt that there are concerns about the impact of AI-generated music on artists’ livelihoods and music creation, and that AI companies should not be allowed to train their models on copyrighted material. It is indeed reassuring to see that our efforts have broad support. “

Main lessons from the study:

General perceptions of AI

  • 98 % have already heard of AI, and almost three-quarters (72%) have used it at least a few times.
  • 55 % of respondents feel curiosity about artificial intelligence while only 19% say they trust him.
