Auto adapters enable the wireless use of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Though, apps such as YouTube or Netflix are excluded there for security reasons. If you still want to start a stream during the break in the parking lot, you can use the Ottocast Play2video Pro.

In addition to the well-known wireless options for the smartphone, the adapter also offers its own Android-based operating system. This offers selected apps such as Amazon Prime Video, Netflix or YouTube. We tried the adapter and show whether this works reliably.

Design

The Ottocast Play2Video Pro is a small, rectangular plastic box that is roughly the size of a petrol lighter. It has a USB A and a USB-C connection. The scope of delivery includes a cable from USB-C to USB-C and USB-A to USB-C. A short guide is included in english and German and explains the basic furnishing steps.

There is a small switch next to the USB A port. This serves to start the coupling with the smartphone and to switch between two connected devices. An LED display provides details about the operating status: red stands for “maintaining electricity, but no connection”, blue for an “active Bluetooth connection” and green for “upgrade mode”, which enables firmware updates via the smartphone.

That is why we also linked the adapter via Bluetooth to both a Honor Magic V3 and an apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.

After successful coupling, the device builds up a local WLAN connection. Then starts on the screen of the home screen of the box’s operating system, which is based on Android. After that, you have to establish a connection to the internet, as this is not automatically via the smartphone. In our case, we set up a hotspot on the cell phone and connected the Play2Video Pro.
